it can be done and will be eventually, of course, especially considering discord's slow decline in usability in a some ways (case in point: the username thing), though i dont consider it at the point that we need one yet
that's a really good question that I've not really thought about, my plan has always been to drag my friends to irc but like you said in the tags that's not a reasonable thing to expect to turn into a "killer app" nowadays
honestly same, and self-hosting an irc server isnt even hard if you wanted to go that route as opposed to making a channel in the free servers, but afaict eventually an app will come out that’s more convenient and people will eventually migrate regardless, which is what happened with discord anyways
